A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I started reading these books…
The Star Wars Expanded Universe is a big place, and one that’s easy to get lost in. To the extent that my bookshelf allows, every Tuesday I or another reviewer will be guiding you through the EU with (generally) chronologically placed reviews of Star Wars novels. Today I will be reviewing Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of Thonboka, the third and final novel of L. Neil Smith’s trilogy The Adventures of Lando Calrissian, and the book that cemented this series’s place as the eccentric uncle of the EU.
After months of harassment by both the Renatasians and Sorceror of Tund Rokur Gepta, Lando comes up with a final plan- really, more of a final gamble, the big sabaac pot- attract all of his enemies and their allies to one place, of his own choosing, where his own allies await under dire threat. All parties involved, some we’ve met, some we haven’t, and some that may surprise you, prepare for the coming confrontation.

In the poll about this column you asked for more coverage of general science fiction. I’ve already done some news in last week’s column, and I have plans to review other books soon, both classic and recently released works. In the meantime, though, I had received a copy of The Clone Codes from Scholastic and thought it would make a good inauguration for the column moving into the wider science fiction field. This is a young adult title (meant for ages 12 and up) that came out on Feb. 1st, and from the description it sounded like something I’d enjoy. Read on to get a brief summary and my thoughts on the book.

The third Star Wars Adventures digest, Luke Skywalker and the Treasure of the Dragonsnakes, was released yesterday and I had the opportunity to get it. Now that I have had the chance to read through it a couple of times I will give you my thoughts on Tom Taylor’s newest Star Wars work.

Continuing with the theme of reviewing Jaden Korr related material, this week I reviewed book II in the Dark Forces trilogy, Rebel Agent. This book does not actually mention Jaden Korr in any way, but is focused on Kyle Katarn, who later took Korr as his apprentice. Just like Soldier for the Empire, Rebel Agent is a graphic novel and is written by William C. Dietz. This time around, however, the artwork was done by Ezra Tucker. To see what I thought of it, check out the review after the break. (Read More…)

Luke Skywalker’s Amazing Story is a DK Readers book that came out last year. My five year old spotted it at the library and immediately wanted me to take it home. He has recently started reading, and since this was a level 1 book, I was anxious to see how it would go (level 1 is for kids who are just beginning to read). This is a 32 page book that does a nice job of following the saga from Luke’s perspective. To learn more, click on the link.
