REVIEW- Star Wars Invasion #4
X-Wingurly and I sat down to discuss Invasion #4, after the break you can
read our thoughts on the newest issue of Invasion!!
Corax: I was very surprised to see Tsalok gracing the first page although it is quite neat to see that Finn already has a personal enemy in the series.
X-Wingurly: Me too. When we last saw him, Finn had spared his life and then Tsalok proceeds to kill hostages. This opening scene was a great foreshadow of his run in with Finn later on. Dare I might even say that we may see a Yuuzhan Vong change his outlook?
Corax: Anything is possible at this point. What I loved about this issue was that we got to see more of the Solo/Skywalker interaction post Chewie. Luke is trying to take care of everyone around him, one of the qualities that I most enjoy about his character is that he cares. Very cool to see Leia and the kids heading out for some quality time finding a smuggler.
X-Wingurly: By far the scene with Luke and Leia was my favorite. While it touched upon it in the books, you actually get to see Luke and Leia be brother and sister. Very poignant and what was even better? They give a panel shot of the moon coming down on Chewie. Totally. Awesome. While Chewie’s death was tragic, seeing him look defiant to the end was epic.
Corax: That is one of the best things about this series is we get a glimpse of things we only read about before. The interaction between Luke and Mara was perfect too. The discussion about fathers and sons was very cool; especially considering what’s going on in FotJ.
X-Wingurly: They have found a way to tie all aspects of the EU together. But we cannot go any further until we talk about Kaye. IMO one of the best non-Jedi, female characters created since Calixte/Corde. And who is not Imperial. I usually favor Imperial women but there is something about Kaye that you just like.
Corax: Have I mentioned before that I love Kaye? I do, I really do. Everything about her just screams “Kick ass!!” The resistance on Artorias is awesome and effective enough to draw on Commander Sha’Kel’s own gaurds. Which leads to Kaye intiating her escape plan. We also finally learn the warrior’s name, Arbeloa.
X-Wingurly: After this, it leads us to Nar Shadda and back to Leia, the Solo kids and Finn. We get some good tidbits with Finn and prowl but it his scene with Han that grabbed my attention since I did not expect Han to show up in this issue.
Corax: When Finn returns to the Falcon to retrieve him we find none other than Han Solo waiting looking scruffy and hagard. Like he’s really showing the effects of missing Chewie. AND Tom totally nailed the interaction between Han and Leia!! That whole scene was heartbreakingly sad and humorous at the same time.
X-Wingurly: I know some people had issues with how Han and Leia’s relationship became strained after Chewie’s death but like Corax said, this scene was nailed to perfection. It showed how far their relationship had gotten off track.
Corax: Finn’s closing remark to Han surprised me a little bit, telling Han not to act like an idiot with Anakin was odd at first. I mean come on it’s Han Solo.
X-Wingurly: This was one of the things that bugged me. I think because Finn is still developing as a character, it didn’t come off the way it was supposed to.
Corax: I thought so too at first but I re-read the comic. It makes sense that Finn would be the character to say this. He was raised by a freaking King after all, who happened to be at one of the most important battles of the Rebbelion era, who is now fighting for his life against one of the greatest threats the GFFA has ever seen. So he does have a leg to stand on and he makes a point that I thought to myself quite a bit in the early part of the NJO series.
X-Wingurly: True. It boils down to your perspective of Finn at this point. After the run in between Han and Finn, we get some reflection at the end which brings the issue full circle.
Corax: There was a great motif on father and sons as Han and Leia watch Finn leave. We also know that Dulac is finding his way back to King Caled. I still think that Dulac is a spy though
X-Wingurly: I am undecided about his character. Give me a couple more issues and then I think I will have a better picture of him. All in all I give it a 8 out 10.
Corax: Definitely a very strong issue that left me wanting more. Thankfully #0 hits next week.
