REVIEW- Star Wars Adventures Volume 3

The third Star Wars Adventures digest, Luke Skywalker and the Treasure of thestar-wars-adventures-vol-3 Dragonsnakes, was released yesterday and I had the opportunity to get it.  Now that I have had the chance to read through it a couple of times I will give you my thoughts on Tom Taylor’s newest Star Wars work.

Let me set the stage for this digest.  It takes place during one of the greatest films ever made, The Empire Strikes Back, it stars Luke Skywalker, Yoda, R2-D2 and a vicious dragonsnake.  The basic premise had me sold on this issue and then you toss in Tom Taylor and this digest was a done deal for me.   We join Luke as he is entering the Dagobah system and we learn that when his X-Wing crashed he hit the king of the Dragonsnakes.  We get the next few sequences from the film and it skips into Luke’s training.  Tom did a great job of capturing the feeling of Luke and Yoda, it felt like the characters I have seen on the screen for the last 30 years, nothing felt forced with their dialog.  A quiet conversation between Yoda and his new apprentice sets Luke up for an adventure he won’t ever forget.  Yoda has declared that there is something he wants Luke to retrieve for him, a prize from the King of the Dragonsnakes, who happens to be obsessed with young Skywaler.    It is during Luke’s quest that something happens that I have wanted to see since the conclusion of the Prequel Trilogy, Yoda and Artoo talk to each other.  The discussion doesn’t last long but it is worth all the waiting.  Now I won’t give away the ending of the comic, simply because it really does fit the dynamic that Luke and Yoda shared on Dagobah.  But what I will say is that during Luke’s quest with the dragonsnake we get an excellent comparison between the Dragonsnake’s hold on the Dagobah swamps and the Empire’s hold on the galaxy.

Tom does a great job in adding to Luke’s training on Dagobah and the art of Daxiong brings it all to vivid life.  There’s danger, excitement, humor, and a good dose of Luke’s determination all brought to the forefront with this story.  I highly recommend this digest if you want to see more of what Luke endured on Dagobah and what helped shape him into the Jedi he became.  Luke Skywalker and the Treasure of the Dragonsnakes is an excellent story and a great way to kick off the thirtieth anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.
