NJOE interviews Tom Taylor- Part 3

invasion_logo1

Today brings the third installment in our interview with Tom Taylor!!  After reading through these answers I have learned one valuable thing, Tom knows how to build suspense.  After the break you can read his answers and see what I mean.

NJOE:  Lumiya was supposed to be around during this time fighting the Yuuzhan Vong with her own fleet. Any chance that she could show up in Invasion?

Tom:  Anything is possible.

NJOE:  As the series progresses, what are your hopes for it?

Tom:  That people can say “a long time ago in galaxy far, far away a series called Invasion began… and it’s still kicking ass.”

NJOE:  Will Luke continue to train Finn throughout the series?

Tom:  I don’t want to spoil this one.

NJOE:  In the early stages of the NJO Han met up with Droma. Could we see him or the Ryn Network?

Tom:  Anything is possible.

NJOE:  Who is the hardest character to write in the series?

Tom:  Finn… oddly enough. I’ve known the others most of my life, and Kaye just smacks me around and tells me how to write her. Dray is a lot of fun… oh, wait. You don’t know about Dray yet.

NJOE:  How long does it take to write an issue of Invasion?

Tom:  From outline to finished script… about forever.  Honestly, this an honor and I never want to take it for granted or rush it, so I put a lot of time into each script.  It’s not uncommon for there to be months between an outline and the first finished script.

NJOE:  How far out do you have Invasion plotted out? Is it one of those things where you see someone’s comment and think to yourself “Wait until you see what we have planned for 2012″?

Tom:  I have this baby planned a long way. I know what happens next, I know what comes after that, I even know how the whole series ends. Plus I have a few ideas for after the ending in case the fans aren’t ready to let us go.
If we don’t sell, all of these stories will stay locked up in my head and you will never know what happens on the edge of the Galaxy in a few years. So, buy our book and, don’t be greedy, buy several for your friends. :)

NJOE:  Let’s say hypothetically Hasbro is planning on making a Finn action figure, do you get one for free?

Tom:  I don’t know. I hope so. Man, I want a Finn action figure. Someone make me a Finn action figure!

NJOE:  Growing up were you into comics? If so what did you read on a monthly basis?

Tom:  Living in Australia, and not having piles of cash, I didn’t really read anything on a monthly basis as a kid.  I tended to go to second-hand shops and pick up old DC superhero comics.
When I was young though, I promised myself that when I grew up and had money I would buy comics.  I’ve kept that promise to a young me… and I’m glad I did.
A few of my faves (I’ve posted some of these somewhere before).

Garth Ennis
Hitman and Preacher are two of my favorite books of all time. Garth Ennis forces you to care more about his characters than anyone else in the business; he can make you laugh, cry and… squirm. His Hellblazer run was also brilliant as was his “Trooper” story in Star Wars Tales #10.

Warren Ellis
Authority, Stormwatch, Planetary, Nextwave, Transmetropolitan, Aetheric Mechanics. The guy has more ideas before breakfast (which I assume is just a cigarette and some cynicism) than most of us have in our lifetimes. I buy almost everything he produces.

Mark Millar
Ultimates, Wolverine, Wanted - A one man movie-making machine. Pacing, scope and twists.

Bendis
Dialogue that Aaron Sorkin would be proud of. I have all of his early stuff. I’ve bought Ultimate Spider-Man since day one and I can’t get enough of Powers.

There are so many more; Vaughan, Whedon, Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman was great), Gaiman, Willingham, Brubaker, Kirkman, Straczynski, Johns, I’m also really enjoying Umbrella Academy and Drew Goddard’s Buffy arc was great.  Joe Kelly’s ‘I Kill Giants’ was by far and away my favorite read of last year.

While I have the opportunity, I want to say thank you and congratulations to John and Jan for Legacy.  It was a great book.

NJOE:  Issue #3 of Invasion introduced us to some hidden facet of Finn involving “holes” or the like. Is this a subplot that we’ll see run throughout all of Invasion, or will it be wrapped up in the first few story arcs?

Tom:  There is something inside Finn Galfridian, something never before seen in the Star Wars universe… and it’s fighting to get out.

See? Suspense.  Who is Dray?  Something inside Finn?  I would like to take the time to thank Tom for doing this interview once again, normally there’s only around six questions in an interview so he has gone way above and beyond here, so thank you Tom :)  I would also like to follow Tom’s example and say thank you to John and Jan for their work on Legacy it’s been great :)
