NJOE Interviews Tom Taylor- Part 4

On behalf of everyone here at NJOE I would like to offer our congratulations to Tom and his wife on their new baby!! Now as we head in to the final chapter we have received an NJOE exclusive answer from Tom, read on for all the juicy details!! You can also read parts 1,2 and 3 if you missed them.
Tom: At the moment I’m interchanging through the stories of all of the characters. Sometimes an issue will focus more on Kaye than Finn. Sometimes the focus will be on Nina or… no, you haven’t met Nagme yet.
NJOE: In Invasion #4, we got to see a bit of the rift that developed between Han and Leia following Chewie’s death. Will we get to see this type of subplot develop throughout the series? (i.e. Will we get to see them revive their relationship?)
Tom: Anything is possible.
NJOE: How much will Invasion overlap with books in the NJO in terms of specific events?
Tom: Specific events will be touched on, but Invasion really does begin to strike out on its own after Rescues. There are some events that are too big to ignore: the fall of Coruscant, the taking of Yavin 4. We can’t escape these. We wouldn’t want to.
NJOE: How do you as a writer create new stories to tell in a pre-created event timeline?
Tom: Caffeine.
NJOE: Of the Galfridian family, who has been your favorite to write?
Tom: Kaye, so far. There is a really nice issue coming up that shows a bit of back history of Nina and Caled that was also great to write. I will say that, as Finn becomes what I know he does, he will be on a par with Kaye… but I’m not sure why everyone assumes Finn is the main character.
NJOE: Is there any other era in SW that you want to write about?
Tom: Yep. All of them. I’m having a great time writing the Adventures books set during the time of the original movies. I hope I can expand into other timelines. In fact, maybe I’m already expanding into other areas… stay tuned.
NJOE: What is your favorite book(s) outside of Star Wars? And if you don’t have a specific one, what is your favorite genre besides Science Fiction?
Tom: Our house is full of bookshelves, full of them! And we still need more. Having said that, it’s been a long time since I read a “good” book. I tend to almost exclusively read comics now, constantly. When you’re writing comics for most of the day, and then reading comics, you tend to need your books to be page-turning trash. There are a lot of books that fit this bill, and I’ve always been a big fantasy fan—Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Feist, Eddings, Robin Hobb, Tolkien. But the problem is my working life is now complete fantasy, so I think it’s probably time for a new direction….
NJOE: You mentioned that you used the death of your dog as inspiration for the cockpit scene with Han; have there been any other real life moments that you added to the Invasion story line?
Tom: Yes, I once fought an alien being in a collapsing building.
NJOE: This is probably off limits, but are there any spoilers or hints that you can give us storywise for future issues?
Tom: Normally, absolutely not. But for you…
I am very happy to leave you with this NJOE.com exclusive.
- There is a great danger coming to the galaxy… one never touched on by the books.
NJOE: On behalf of the NJOE community, we send our thanks for the great work you have done so far with Invasion as well as taking the time to answer our questions. Keep up the good work!
Tom: Thank you. Keep up the good work yourself! Great website. And, on top of all of the Star Wars in the future, please keep an eye out for my run on The Authority - starting May 5th.
And remember, generally if you love something, you set it free. If you love Invasion, hassle all of your friends and relatives until they buy it
