Review - Knights of the Old Republic vol 8: Destroyer

kotor-8With volume 8 I’m coming close to the end of this series, and I can certainly understand why fans were so disappointed when it was announced that Knights of the Old Republic would be coming to an end. The pace has really picked up, and each collected volume has been well worthwhile since Vindication – and Destroyer is no exception. Picking up where Dueling Ambitions left off, Zayne’s group of misfits has just discovered Jarael’s secret – she was once a slaver. Now they all have to decide what that means for them, and where it will lead them next.

Spoiler Review: The Old Republic - Fatal Alliance by Sean Williams

torfatal_bg1Before I even had this novel in my hands, I already had some preconceived notions. First, Sean Williams is the author, and I was not a big fan of his previous video game adaptation, The Force Unleashed novelization. Secondly, the last MMO novel, Galaxies: Ruins of Dantooine was, in my opinion, the worst book in all of the Expanded Universe. So with that said, I was very skeptical about this one as soon as I heard the first announcement for the book. To see if it was as bad as I was expecting, read on after the break.

In Case You Missed It - Week of 7/13/2010 to 7/19/2010

08-aug10-p-c1-2x3Sometimes a whole bunch of news comes out during the course of a given week that articles just don’t last long enough on our front page. Or perhaps it’s just that the piece of news wasn’t enough to warrant a front page story, but is still deserving of being recognized as newsworthy. In Case You Missed It is meant to be our catch-all for those things – a way for us to summarize the past week’s worth of news. Due to this column being delayed by a day, and the volume of news about SDCC and CV that came out over this past week, I’m going to direct you to the threads devoted to those topics in our forum for the latest news (for instance, that Mark Hamil will be attending CV, or that Bioware wants to reveal something extra at SDCC, but first they want to reach a certain amount of followers on Facebook and Twitter).

Spoiler Free: The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance by Sean Williams

The time for the first of my Spoiler Free reviews of Star Wars: The Old Republic is here. If you’re like me and hear “spoilers” and run as far away as possible, or even if you just need something to hold you over for another few days, you can finally find out what Sean Williams’s Fatal Alliance is like.

This is a special edition of Spoiler Free, in that there will actually be spoilers available! This review will be posted in two parts- the spoiler free review, in which I analyze the book without any regard to the plot, and the spoilers, which will include the plot summary, my reaction to specific points, and other spoiler-filled details.

A package for me?” I asked, surprised, as I signed the delivery being’s datapad. From Corax, no less, I noted as the delivery being nodded the affirmative. Once he- she? It? - left, I wasted no time in opening the package. It contained a device of alien design, made of metals I had never seen before, and a note. I read the note first. “Lord Iurus,” it prefaced, “You are invited to join me in exploration of a new world. The Old Republic has borne its first tangible fruits, and if you dare, you are welcome to join me in tasting them.” I lifted the device, taking careful note of the characters and buttons on it. It wasn’t long, however, before I realized that the device was keyed to my biological signature. Nor was it as docile as it appeared. (Read More…)

Why The Force Unleashed II Was Inevitable - Secrets of the Dark Side

tfulogoTwo years ago in a galaxy far, far away…

The STAR WARS world was taken by storm by a conflicted SITH APPRENTICE. He wore his mastery of THE FORCE like a mixture of a billboard and a battering ram in the way he acted as a mobile HURRICAN KATRINA in his missions throughout the STAR WARS GALAXY. Most shocking of all, he did this in an era that was RESTRICTED for so long- a time period whose stories so far had been confined to smugglers, gambers and spies and mostly published OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO.

In THE FORCE UNLEASHED, STARKILLER defined events fans had only dreamed about, while at the same time displaying public acts of FORCE prowess that would have made OBI-WAN KENOBI second guess his decision to leave an untrained LUKE SKYWALKER alone with STARKILLER’S MASTER.tfu2

In the end, STARKILLER too, renamed GALEN MAREK after the child he had once been, made the ultimate sacrifice, becoming the inspiration not for the rebellion itself, but for its leaders and its symbolism.

But there’s more to STARKILLER’S story…

In Defence of…Lumiya

Star Wars has not been without controversy even from its beginning to the present, whether it be Luke and Leia’s kiss Jaina Solo’s love life or the destruction of Alderaan the palette of vomit they used for the colouring and penciling of Dark Empire. In my (guest) column (that I borrowed this month from Dancelittleewok), I will strive to utterly defend its controversial authors, ideas, or characters– one of the most hardcore and enduring villains of the franchise to the best of my ability. My intent is to bring these issues her issues of extreme sexiness her levels of extreme awesome villainy to light and explore a little of what makes her such a capable villain and why she was one of the best and most consistent things about Legacy of the Force.

This month’s case is none other than the luscious Lady Lumiya, My Dark Lady (otherwise known as Shira Brie). Just why is she so sexy? More boringly importantly, what makes her such a compelling villain, and also one of the more positively memorable things about Legacy of the Force? Crack that lightwhip…. er… I mean, click the link to find out…

Saucer of blue milk, table for two… hawt ladies: FELINX FIGHT!

A Galaxy Not So Far Away - New Avengers / Transformers

aveng-transI’ve heard nothing but bad things about this series, from reviews that have blasted every aspect of it (concept to execution) and yet there was something compelling about it to me. I’ve loved the Transformers for a long time, it was one of my favorite toys (and probably the last toy line I was really into as a kid), and I’ve been a fan of Marvel comics for a long time. This seemed like the equivalent of a summer movie blockbuster – maybe not all that intelligent, but certainly it should be entertaining.

And I’m here to tell you it is exactly that. Don’t listen to all the negative press about this series – no, it’s not the greatest Avengers or Transformers story I’ve ever read – but let’s be clear here; we’re talking about superheroes and sentient robots from outer space. Is there any particular reason these two franchises can’t get along? (Read More…)

Review – Knights of the Old Republic vol 7: Dueling Ambitions

kotor-7A new beginning of sorts starts with volume 7 of Knights of the Old Republic, with Zayne free from the charges that had plagued him up until now. The group we’ve grown accustomed to following can go on new adventures, find new trouble, and most importantly seek out new ways to make money. I went into this volume expecting not to like it – most people seem to not care for this arc of the story – but I was pleasantly surprised to find it very compelling, and I’ll tell you why after the break.
